After what seemed like a whirlwind month of HHBA events, November looks to be a time to still enjoy our late fall colors and get ready for the holiday season. First I hope everyone exercised their right to vote. I know you’ve heard it from all the media, politicians and celebrities; so what’s it hurt to hear it from me; please do not dismiss this hard fought freedom. Cast your ballot and be heard.
The 2008 Fall Parade of Homes/Home and Garden Expo committees have meet and we have reviewed all our responses and I’m happy to say both events were successful. In consideration of the economic times, revenues from these events are down, which we had anticipated, but attendance for both events was good. The decision to change venue and move the Expo to the Waynesville Armory worked out by getting overflow participation from the festival traffic in town. We need to address some issues of parking at the facility, but ample parking was available in the adjacent lots. In canvassing attendee’s at the door, people were impressed by the cozy transformation of the Armory and the quality of information available. My complaint to you is the participation of the HHBA membership itself. During the Friday General Meeting/Vendor Appreciation Night a great opportunity was missed by not attending and benefiting from the effort made by these businesses dedicated to our industry. As we continue with this event next year I would appreciate comment from our membership which could rally your support.
One goal achieved by coordinating the Parade of Homes and Expo closely together was many of the visitors to the Expo came to visit our Parade Entries this year. Being my first year having a Parade Home I was impressed that over 150 potential clientele came through our project to view and comment. I appreciate the effort made by the Parade Committee and our HHBA staff of presenting these excellent homes to the Public. For both of these events, I would like to thank all of the Sponsors and Participants. I think we are onto something with great potential and I look forward to reaching even greater heights next year from what we have learned.Stellar Media has added video to our commercial promoting HHBA and we will complete the committee review early this month. I’m excited to have this tool available to promote our organization, HHBA must create resources to better relate our message to protect and serve the building industry in our mountain community.
Congratulations to our 2009 HHBA Board of Directors. Mike Carpenter with NCHBA is our guest speaker November 10th and will install our new Board. Also at our General Meeting Awards will be presented to our Parade of Homes winners and certificates to the entry homes. It will be an eventful evening and I hope to see you there. Also, we will be sending RSVP’s for our annual HHBA Christmas Party December 12th, please let us know as soon as possible.
I’m sad to announce that Sylvia Cochran, after showing great promise will be leaving her E.O. position with HHBA. She received a great opportunity to advance herself and we wish her the best in her future endeavors.
Thank you and God bless, Alan Best
OCTOBER NEWS
Hello everyone,
Well fall is already here and October promises to be a great month for HHBA. As the Mountains come alive in their fall splendor and visitors arrive to relish in the autumn hues, HHBA is among the attractions to be experienced in Western North Carolina; particularly if your interest is in making a home here. As you all know our 2008 Homeand Garden Expo is the 11th and 12th at the Waynesville Armory with a special General Membership meeting Friday the 10th. Your participation is critical to show our Vendors that we appreciate their confidence in HHBA and in the building industry. Come and network with everyone all under one roof, you’ll walk away with something to improve your bottom-line; which is essential in our economy. This is not all business though; we will be enjoying refreshments during our social hour and the HHBA staff has some delicious Hors D’oeuvres picked out as well.
This month also wraps up with the 2008Fall Parade of Homes. All the entries are in and the Parade Guide is circulating as we speak. This is a great way for you to support the effort of our participants and their subcontractors as well. Visit these Homes and see what the latest trends are and take a friendly peek at your competition. This event is not just for our visitors and perspective homebuyers, but HHBA members as well.
Stellar Media has the approved script for our Commercial promoting HHBA and will film early this month. I’m satisfied their depiction of our organization will raise public awareness and confidence, plus portray HHBA as professionals concerned with protection of our valuable mountain resource and way of life.
Pay particular attention to our nominees for the 2009 HHBA Board of Directors. I feel these individuals for your consideration will be invaluable to us in the upcoming year. Mike Carpenter with NCHBA is our guest speaker in November, explaining your Build-Pac money at work and will be installing our new Board during the General Meeting.
We had many members of HHBA at the 21st Century Builders Expo and as always it was a great show. I attended the NAHBGreen Building Professional course which was sold out with a waiting list and I would highly recommend this to any of our members when it is back in our area. Many misconceptions regarding Green Building were dispelled during the program and the course material is a valuable resource in linking you to Green Built opportunities. An extra advantage is sitting in a room with a hundred building professionals whose shared wealth of knowledge is tremendous.
I’m honored this month to present Senator Joe Sam Queen, County Commissioner Candidates Mark Swanger and Kevin Ensley checks supporting their political campaigns this November. They have historically been friends supporting the issues affecting the building industry and I’m sure we can count on them in the future.
Again, October is a busy month at HHBA and I hope to see you at all at our upcoming events. It should be an exciting month and plenty of business opportunities.
Thank you and God bless, Alan Best
SEPTEMBER NEWS
Hello everyone,
Hot off the presses, everyone take a look at the HHBA Guide to the 2008 Fall Parade of Homes / Home and Garden Show. I’m very proud of our Parade committee, HHBA staff, Publisher, Artist, Builders, Associates, and Property Owners who have exerted a tremendous effort to make this guide a reality. Get yours today and plan for October.
We’ve had our first committee meeting concerning the Stellar Media 60-second commercial promoting HHBA, which accompanies our upcoming relocation DVD. I’m excited about the possibilities of reaching a broad audience with our message to protect, preserve and promote home building in Haywood County and Western North Carolina. We should have script development early this month and be ready to air in October. Now is the time to promote Haywood County as a wonderful place to live, and with support from HHBA a potential homeowner should be aware and able to avoid many pit-falls by listening to our Association professionals.
I have my bags packed and I’m ready to head down to Charlotte next week for the 21st Century Builder’s Expo. If you have never been to the International Builder’s Show, this is an opportunity to see all the exhibits in our own backyard. I will be attending the NAHB Green Building Professional Certification program and the 3rd Quarter NCHBA Conference. I know many of our members plan to attend and earn more NCBI credits toward their Accredited Builder/Associate designations; which Contractor’s are recognized by the North Carolina Licensing Board for General Contractor’s. Aside from the class-room studies there are ongoing Seminars on the Expo floor plus a drawing for a $10,000 cash prize each day. I hope to see you there - remember us little people if you’re holding one of those big checks.
With pleasure, I’m happy to welcome our speaker for this month, Senator Joe Sam Queen. While I was in Raleigh for legislative day I felt most welcome in Senator Queen’s office. He is a strong supporter of home ownership, affordable housing and has worked with Mike Carpenter and NCHBA staff. He is a true friend to our industry, one of our own, and should garner your support in his re-election bid this November.
I would like to mention how much I appreciate a certain individual, formerly of the Haywood County Inspections Department. No, I’m not trying to get any points on my upcoming C.O., but really want to recognize a person who exemplifies, in my mind, why we have high standards here in Haywood County. Nancy Cowan has retired from the County after 31 years of service and she will surely be missed. I would like to extend many thanks to her and pray she is blessed as she proceeds from here.
There has been a change in schedule due to our recent relief with last week’s rains. The United Way Day of Caring has been rescheduled for the 10th of September. Unfortunately, many of our team members will be in Charlotte that day and we’ll be short handed. If at all possible we need more support from our membership, search your hearts and help these folks out. You will be happy you did. Information regarding our team projects is available from Larry Phillips and the HHBA staff.
Thank you and God bless, Alan Best
AUGUST NEWS
Hello everyone,
It’s hard for me to accept its August already and the fall building season is just around the corner. I hope you have your reservations for the 21st Century Home Builder Expo in Charlotte, an entry in for the upcoming Fall Parade of Homes and you have picked out a booth at the HHBA Home and Garden Show. These are exciting business opportunities in our competitive building market and I look forward to seeing you there.
We had a big turn-out for our HHBA Associates AppreciationPicnic. There were many a good looking cow-hand about which would have been an asset to any farm or ranch, even without their horses. Sorry about our Gunfighter demonstration; I believe their powder was wet and pointing a pistol and yelling bang isn’t quite the same. All in all everyone got their bellies full of premium Steaks and Fixing’s for a wonderful time of fellowship among our builders and associates. I want to extend a big thank-you to all our volunteers and sponsors who continue to make this a successful HHBA event.
Of particular interest to me, Mark Shumpert, the Haywood County Engineer, is the guest speaker for our next general meeting. All involved in mountain construction know how significant proper slope management is to protecting our client’s property and our environment. Slope stabilization and sedimentation control are critical to our success and HHBA pursues a proactive position in proper land development by licensed contractors. This should be an informative discussion which can put aside some misinformation about the counties adopted slope ordinance. Kevin Johnson of Home Energy Partners will also be speaking to inform us of better practices to meet demanding energy conservation needs. The feasibility of incorporating Energy Star into our current projects is becoming a necessity versus an option with the radical increases in energy cost.
I would like to extend my heartfelt appreciation to Home Trust Bank for becoming a HHBA Diamond Sponsor. It goes without saying that Pat Owen and everyone at Home Trust Bank over the years has shown a deep commitment to the growth and improvement of the building industry in Haywood County and Western North Carolina. We always look forward to seeing them at every HHBA event and we would be at a loss without their continued support.
Last month our NCBI class "Borrowing Bucks for Builders", was an eye-opening experience. Jim Bowman presented a wealth of information in a very short time and like most NCBI courses you leave with plenty of questions; except now you have a direction to find the appropriate answers. We plan to take a short break in offering courses until after our busy schedule in September and October. In the next months we will be looking for suggestions as to what curriculum you would like HHBA to present. Please contact myself, Ron DeSimone or the HHBA staff with your comments.
Sign-up for the 2008 Home and Garden Expo is still on-going, but now space is limited. Our staff is known for having the knack for fitting people in what promises to be a great downtown HHBA show. Give us the opportunity to bring your product line out to our Fall Seasonal Visitor/Prospective Home Owner before the peak of the WNC colors.
Thank you and God bless, Alan Best
JULY NEWS
I hope everyone is ready for the big HHBA round-up July 14th at the Maggie Valley Pavilion. It’s time for our Annual Associate’s Appreciation Picnic. Buckle on your spurs and gather all your family buckaroo’s and let’s show our Associate Members how vital they are to our organization. There’s always great food grilled and served by your builder hosts and a wonderful opportunity to share our HHBA experience with family members.
I had the privilege, along with our E.O. staff, to represent HHBA at the 2nd Quarter NCHBA Board & Committee Meeting in Raleigh. These meetings which address your business interest are vital to our organization in preparing delegates to present your case to our State Legislators’. I had the opportunity to meet Senators Joe Sam Queen and JohnSnow; plus RepresentativesRay Rapp, Phil Haire, Bruce Goforth and Susan Fisher. Key legislative priorities we presented included Repeal the Coastal Storm water Rule, Prohibit Adequate PublicFacilities Fees, Prohibit Unauthorized Permit Conditions, Combat Job Site Vandalism, Support the Housing Trust Fund, Repeal the Land-Transfer Tax and Oppose any ImpactFee, Impact Tax, or Real Estate Transfer Tax. I enjoyed accompanying, in our Region X delegation, Asheville HBA President Sean Sullivan, Region X Vice President Zac Koenig and the Asheville HBA E.O. staff. In particular interest to our area the legislation regarding Steep Slope Development has been tabled and will be revisited in 2009. If you have the opportunity to participate in this important NCHBA event in the future your voice does make a difference if heard.
While in Raleigh I discussed with NCHBA the concern of paying multiple national and state dues for members in multiple associations. Essentially our argument, though having merit, can not be corrected at the local or state HBA level, but requires the attention of NAHB. In an effort to promote regional membership advantages I have directed our HHBA staff to identify all of our members who are in this position and I would like to propose development of a committee of this select group of individuals to promote events and offer insight as to what’s new and relevant to inspire a fresh look to HHBA. These folks are highly committed to HBA and I feel deserve our recognition and we could benefit from their input. If you are a dual HBA member please contact me at bestbuilt@bellsouth.net to discuss this issue.
I would like to thank Ron Moser of Haywood Waterways for speaking at our June HHBA meeting. Currently I am participating with them as a Small Builder and Developer in planning a small development and they are a tremendous source of information by actually being onsite to aide in the evaluation of each home site. Today the buzz is Green Building; next adequate pre-planning is its compliment to provide truly sustainable growth.
A lot is going on in July. I hope to see you at our NCBI class "Borrowing Bucks for Builders". Also, we need all of our entry info in for" The Fall Parade of Homes" / "Builders Showcase". If you plan on participating in the "Home and Garden Expo" the choice booths are going fast.
Have a happy and safe 4th of July Holiday.
Thank you and God bless, Alan Best
JUNE NEWS
Hello everyone,
First I would like to thank all our Committee members and staff for their effort in making our 2008 HHBA Golf Tournament a great success. We had wonderful support from our sponsors and tip-toeing around the weather everyone came in just a little wet behind the ears. I appreciated the turn-out and enthusiasm of all the players; from the feedback I received visiting them everyone had a good day.
It’s that time of the year to turn east and bend the ears of our State Legislator’s. Richard, Sylvia, myself and Region 10 Vice President Zac Koenig will be attending the 2nd Quarter NCHBA Board & Committee Meetings and Legislative Conference in Raleigh. Specifically I plan to attend the following meetings; Land Development, GreenBuildingCouncil and the Local HBA President’s Meeting. One issue we are to address with NCHBA is the concern of paying multiple national and state dues for members who hold memberships in multiple associations. We would like to propose having a primary membership and allow secondary memberships at a reduced rate similar to the affiliate membership to promote regional membership advantages. Cooperation among HBA’s would benefit small business, which most Associate and Builder members are. If any of you have comments pertaining to this issue please contact me at bestbuilt@bellsouth.net .
I would like to thank Haywood County Manager David Cotton and Waynesville TownPlanner Paul Benson for speaking at our May HHBA meeting. Having informative speakers representing our local government and personally interacting with us promotes good business and good government.
Congratulations are in order for HHBA friend Candidate Mark Swanger in winning his primary election bid for Haywood County Commissioner. Good Luck in November and we look forward to hearing from you soon.
I apologize to our NCHBI students who had planned to attend our class last month “Borrowing Bucks for Builders”. We are rescheduled for July and I hope to see you there. Please take advantage of this HHBA opportunity.
Our office staff and committee members are busy planning our upcoming events which include the Associates Appreciation Picnic. This is always a fun event that has taken on a new theme this year of the "Wild West"... the Parade of Homes and Builders Showcase is already well underway and will also give our builders the opportunity to be in the guide even if they do not have a home to show... Our Home & Garden Expo has a new location at the Armory in Waynesville. This will provide excellent exposure for our vendors with increased foot traffic during one of the busiest times of the year. We are excited about these upcoming events and look forward to your continued involvement and support.
Thank you and God bless, Alan Best
MAY NEWS
Hello everyone, Haywood CountyHome Builder’s Association is in a transition period at this time and I am happy to announce we are welcoming aboard not one but two well qualified individuals for our Executive Officer position. In the selection process your board found that currently our staff is reaching capacity in maintaining the duties and responsibilities at hand. To facilitate future growth of our organization the board realized the need to continue with two office staff personnel. I am pleased to announce our selection of Richard Applehand and Sylvia Cochran. I would like to thank all of the candidates who applied for this position. Graciously Joyce and Patty are going to work with us during their training period to ensure continuity in HHBA. If you have a chance to stop by and welcome your new staff, please feel free to do so.
It’s time to hang up your apron, put away your tools, dust off your clubs and put on those golf shoes. The HHBAAnnual Golf Tournament is here and we still have limited space available for teams and individuals in what promises to be an exciting event. If you’d like to participate contact our office and please don’t wait till the last minute and miss out.
Of course you all know that May 6th is; ELECTION DAY. HHBA, this election, is endorsing candidate Mark Swanger in the Haywood County Board of Commissioners race. As Past Commissioner Chairman Mark Swanger was a strong friend of HHBA particularly in discussion and refinement of the original Slope Ordinance legislation. He insured that our voice was heard and that our suggestions were taken into consideration. Everyone please get to the polls, show your support and vote.
While I am on the subject of voting you need to be aware that May is NCHBA BUILD-PAC month. This year there is a NCHBA Fund Raising Contest for highest dollar amount raised, highest percentage of assessed goal raised and highest percentage of member participation between May 1st and May 31st. Prizes are to be awarded to winning HBA’s in each of these categories which will be deposited in local BUILD-PAC reserves or general funds. We will be providing pledge forms at our general meeting and also they are available on our website. Remember that any personal contributions postmarked by May 31st will qualify for our association’s total.
We had a strong turn-out for our NCBI courses "Building Codes" and "Construction Industry and the ADA". With rising fuel prices having a local course available is a great savings, plus lunch and snacks provided by our staff. I would like to thank the Focus School of Real Estate for the use of their great facility. Robert Privott, our NCHBA Code Advisor, did a great job covering these difficult topics. I hope to see you May 6th for our course on "Borrowing Bucks for Builders" with instructor Jim Bowman.
This year we have a new venue for the Builder’s Expo which I’m excited to take part in. We will be coordinating our event at the Old Armory in Waynesville the second weekend in October; which will lead up to our Fall Parade of Homes. Committee members are being sought for the Expo and if interested please contact me at 506-9943.
Lastly, we would like to congratulate the Pisgah and Tuscola High School scholarship winners. We have awarded 6 scholarships to these students totaling $3000.00. Also, scholarships were awarded to three of our members children/grandchildren/step-children in the amount $1500.00 in their 2-4th year in college. And finally to our Haywood Community College student group $1000.00. We are very proud of the fact that the HHBA is able to donate $5500.00 to our local students. Our children are our future.
Thank you and God bless, Alan Best
APRIL NEWS
Hello everyone Spring is in the air and big things are happening with HHBA. I hope you are adjusted to our new general meeting schedule on the second Monday of each month. I would like to thank Susan Rosfjord for her informative presentation regarding Radon Mitigation. This is such an affordable practice to implement upfront, with multiple benefits and added security for homeowners. I highly recommend you giving this your attention and consideration in your next project. If you have any further questions checkout www.ncradon.org/ or www.epa.gov/radon/.
NCHBA recently held its quarterly meeting and some key issues affecting Western NC are being addressed. Your NCHBA staff is continuing to battle the land transfer taxauthority and steep slope legislation. Remember these are your BUILD-PAC dollars at work. Consider your candidates positions and voting history in the upcoming elections on this legislation as we go to the polls in May and November. Also, in response to our Region X meeting in January NCHBA will look at introducing legislation related to stopping unlicensed contractors. Details of the proposed bill are being worked out and it’s satisfying to note our voice has been heard. A NCHBA by-laws change was officially voted on and a Green Building Council will be started. This coincides with the introduction of the NAHB Green Building Program. NAHB and NCHBA program goals include having one clear definition of "green" and having one official program endorsed by the builder’s association. To answer everyone’s questions regarding these developing programs visit www.nahbgreen.com.
Congratulations to Asheville HBA on their successful WNC Home Show. I was impressed by the number of exhibitors and the wealth of information available. Also, these events are great networking opportunities; at your leisure you can visit so many builders and associates, in our area, gathering ideas and seeing new innovation. I encourage you all to attend future ones.
We have had another tremendous NCBI course "Take-Off to Higher Profits" / "WhatDoes it Really Cost" and I would like to thank all of our participants. This is such an affordable opportunity to have these certifications classes locally and I was impressed by the representation from our regional HBA’s. GregIsenhour is a knowledgeable instructor out-lining a broad subject and he received positive responses. I believe everyone walked away with something to directly benefit their business, whether builder or associate member. Sign up has already started for our next class in April addressing building codes. We look forward to seeing you there.
Maggie Valley Festival Grounds needs HHBA’s help to install paneling and trim in the new ticket booth. Volunteers can call Mike Mehaffey (400-9494) for the date and time.
The Board & Members of HHBA wish to extend condolences to Ron Muse &his family on the loss of his wife Marie. Ron is a Charter Member of HHBA and was it’s first President in 1979. Please keep the Muse family in your prayers.
Thank you and God bless, Alan Best
MARCH NEWS
What a great Associates Table Top Night. If you missed this networking opportunity, better luck next year. Lucky individuals were there; with wonderful auction items, drawings and delicious hors d’œuvres. We had a large turn-out and Joyce with the staff from Waynesville Country Club had an excellent set-up. I would also like to thank all of our sponsors, member donations and committee members for making this a memorable HHBA event.
It looks like everything has come together for our upcoming NCBI classes, Take-off toHigher Profits and What Does It Really Cost with Instructor Greg Isenhour on March 18th. I attended both of these courses at the 21st Century Expo and highly recommend them. Greg is an outstanding instructor whose course I’m sure you’ll find informative and enjoyable. Please take advantage of this opportunity to receive your continuing education credits towards Accredited Builder and Accredited Master Builder State License Designations. Contact Joyce at 828-454-0221 or thru the HHBA website for registration information.
I would like each of you to be aware of a recent change made by your HHBA Board of Directors concerning Affiliate membership. Membership Dues for Affiliate Members are now set at $175.00 annually; which includes general meeting meals, National and State dues and our annual Christmas Party. This is a tremendous opportunity to increase our membership and the voice of our organization. You have personnel within your companies who could receive the benefits of being members of HHBA. Whether it be a Building Superintendent, Sales Associate or a Spouse who is involved in your business; please take advantage of this opportunity to broaden what HHBA can do for you in your operation.
Next I would like to share with you my concern for our friend and Executive Officer Patty Marsteller who due to a family situation will be leaving us. Patty has been a tremendous asset and resource for our organization and will be sorely missed. Graciously she will be helping us from home while we make this transition; which through everyone’s help we will accomplish. Thank you Joyce for stepping in as our life-line to make sure HHBA continues business as usual. If any of you are aware of someone who might be interested in this position, please contact me at 828-506-9943 or Joyce at our office. Finding someone attune to our industry, which can rise to a challenge, with a passion for the mission of the Home Builder’s Association would be our ideal candidate. Again Patty we love you, wish you the best and appreciate your continued support.
Thank you and God bless, Alan Best
FEBRUARY NEWS
Hello everyone,
I hope you each are having great success with your New Year’s resolutions and I’m sure support for HHBA is high on everyone’s list. Following our Board of Directors Retreat and our Region X Annual Meeting we have great opportunities’ ahead for our membership in 2008.
We have a strong Board of Directors for this year and I am very well pleased with the enthusiasm in which each officer and director stepped up to the plate concerning chair positions. The process though is still incomplete. We need your participation on these committees and as you are approached or feel there is an area which sparks your interest, please become involved. You will reap a reward in knowing your support will make a difference in the success of our organization.
Meeting our NCHBA Board, Staff and Region X officers is always rewarding and we have a talented leadership who are already at work facing issues which affect our industry. We had representation from all the HBA’s and we are developing communication through the Region 10 Coalition to address upcoming concerns. Already the State Slope Ordinance is being revisited. A meeting was held Jan 10th with at least 100 area HBA members there voicing concern to our legislators; feel free to contact me or the HHBA staff if you would like copies of that proposal. We have a working Slope Ordinance in Haywood County, why do we need to be mandated by Raleigh when we are addressing the issue ourselves? Having an Engineer overseeing our current County Slope Ordinance is a direct result of negotiations with HHBA and County Officials. Other topics discussed during Region X included unlicensed building activity, contractors working beyond license limitations, recruitment and retention of membership and accommodating the needs and interest for continuing education in WNC. Plus a new statewide program promoting Green Building is under development. Please contact me if you would like to discuss further the topics covered at Region X.
On the regional level an educational opportunity is available at Lake Norman HBA University. Classes are being held at Mitchell Community College in Mooresville, NC on a monthly basis. This will afford a great savings compared to the drive and accommodation cost in Raleigh. I would like to encourage taking advantage of this program.
I hope to see all of our area licensed contractors at the Associates Table Top Night this month. Please make a little extra effort to invite Builders to this event. It is a great builder recruitment tool and is a key to networking possibilities HHBA affords. There is a wealth of information in regard to building products and a definite business incentive with associates and builders drawn together this informative evening.
There are exciting possibilities available through your HHBA and I solicit your continued support for the months ahead.
Thank you and God bless, Alan Best
JANUARY NEWS
Hello everyone,
First I would like to thank you for your vote of confidence in selecting me as your new HHBAPresident. Humbly I accept this office and with the continued support of you, your HHBA Board ofDirectors and EO staff we will have a successful year in 2008. Thru the past year serving as a Board member, my eyes were opened as to what the HBA does for each of us; beyond what I gathered from attending the general meetings I realized a great effort is involved in coordinating all the events throughout the year not to mention addressing the hot issues which are having a direct effect on our industry. I would like to encourage each you to take a step up and accept the challenge of being on one of the committees which are forming at our Board of Directors Retreat this month. We have had great participation in each of our events so I know the interest is there. Be part of the decision process, I would greatly respect your input.
Meeting the challenge of following a great act is initially what we are faced with in the upcoming year and I would like to commend Ron DeSimone for his tireless leadership as HHBA President. He has changed the face of our organization into a force to be reckoned with. I look forward to his continued support as Past President and I’m excited about his commitment to the Region 10Coalition. You can continue to expect great things from Ron and he has established a high standard for us to maintain. He has definitely raised thebar and now we have to get over it.
I have several immediate goals I’m committed to for the upcoming year which looks to be difficult at best. With all the negative news regarding the building industry and real estate market we need to take a realistic look at our local building economy. Haywood County and Western North Carolina is still a great area to be in the Building Business. Definitely we need to tighten up our belts and your HBA has the tools to help you do that. NCBI courses are now available in our region to help members receive Accredited Builder, Accredited Associate and Accredited Master Builder State recognized designations. This could not have happened at a better time than now. We need to raise consumer’s confidence and this HBA membership benefit is right on target; addressing our creditability in view of the public. In my experience NCBI courses eventually pay for themselves. Each course I’ve attended has greatly enhanced my professional knowledge and given me an awareness of pitfalls to avoid. The instructors are seasoned professionals in our industry, plus there is a wealth of knowledge from your piers in each class. Please take advantage of this HBA opportunity.
We will continue to address the issue of Unlicensed Building in Haywood County. At our recent general meeting Mike Silvers of the North Carolina General Contractors Licensing Board commended Bruce Crawford for his effort in reporting this unscrupulous activity in our County. This has to be addressed at the local level by instilling public and professional awareness. Each of you as HHBA members are having your livelihood undermined by this rouge business practice and it is our task to bring all individuals involved in this under public scrutiny.
Build-Pac is the teeth by which we chew on the legislative issues affecting the building industry. We have to have your continued support, particularly in our current economy, to see that political practices which inhibit reasonable growth are not in place. We need to promote ourselves as a self policing association wanting to preserve our natural resources. Done correctly, future growth potential in our area is tremendous; but we need to educate ourselves, the public and governing bodies. This simply takes time and your contributions, not by just a select few, but by all to have our voice heard.
Now of all times membershipin your HBA is paramount and promoting ourselves to potential Builder and Associate Members should be on everyone’s agenda. We have a daunting task this upcoming year of not letting our membership renewals waiver especially as each of us look at our bottom-line. Your benefits far outweigh your dues in navigating these economic waters, which would be truly uncertain without the resources of HHBA. Our strength is in our numbers, again not with just a few exceptional individuals.
Finally I would like to ask you all to thank Patty and Joyce for the great job they do in orchestrating all the intricate details involved in having this great association. I would not have dreamed of accepting this position as HHBA President without the constant support, friendship and professionalism these women have shown to me. Pray for me and my family as we try to do our best in meeting your expectations and together we will have another great year.
